SaneBox vs Superhuman: a filter for the inbox you have, or a new email app
By Jean Luc Poitier, SEO and growth marketing strategist · SaneBox Reviews · Updated October 1, 2026 · Superhuman facts from its own pricing, help, and legal pages
These two sit in different categories. SaneBox is a filter: it runs on the server, moves less important mail into folders, and you keep reading email in Gmail, Outlook, Apple Mail, or whatever app you use now. Superhuman Mail is an email client you switch to. You read and send everything inside its apps, and its AI sorting, drafting, and keyboard shortcuts come with it.
Superhuman costs more: $25 to $40 per member a month against SaneBox's $9.49 to $15.99 for one or two accounts, and it only works with Gmail and Microsoft 365. Pick Superhuman if you want a faster, keyboard-driven email app with AI writing built in and your mail is on Google or Microsoft. Pick SaneBox if you want your current app to show only the mail that matters, on any provider, for less.

A filter in your email app vs a new email app
SaneBox doesn't replace anything. It connects to your mailbox and moves each new message based on how you treat the sender: people you answer stay in the inbox, the rest go to SaneLater, newsletters can go to SaneNews, and senders you drop into SaneBlackHole stop showing up. Because these are ordinary folders on the server, the sorting shows up in every app and on every device. You train it by moving mail between folders.
Superhuman Mail is the app itself. You sign in with Google or Microsoft and do all your email inside it. It sorts too: Split Inbox divides the inbox into tabs (VIPs, team, tools), and AI Auto Labels separate marketing, cold pitches, and social updates, with Auto Archive to clear them. On top of that come keyboard shortcuts for everything, AI drafts that copy your writing style, reminders, snooze, Send Later, read statuses, calendar booking, and team comments. Reviewers mostly praise the speed once the shortcuts become habit.
“The keyboard shortcuts let me fly through emails without ever touching the mouse.”Igor S., G2, August 2026
Which one fits depends on whether you want to change apps. If you like Apple Mail, Outlook, or your phone's built-in mail app, SaneBox works inside it. If you've been looking for a faster client and use Gmail or Microsoft 365, Superhuman is built for that.
“I like how SaneBox really just works without needing a separate application.”Verified User, G2, June 2026
SaneBox vs Superhuman pricing, trials, and refunds
Superhuman costs more. Mail Starter is $30 per member a month, or $25 a month billed annually ($300 a year). Business, which adds Auto Drafts, Ask AI, custom AI labels, and HubSpot and Salesforce, is $40 a month or $33 billed annually ($396 a year). SaneBox's Snack plan is $9.49 a month or $65 a year for one account with two features, Lunch is $15.99 a month or $109 a year for two accounts, and Dinner covers four accounts with every feature for $42.99 a month or $319 a year. See the SaneBox pricing breakdown for what each plan includes.
SaneBox offers a 7-day trial with all features and no card, and a 30-day money-back guarantee on eligible purchases if you ask support. Superhuman publishes no standard trial for Mail; some of its landing pages show a “Claim free month” promotion whose terms appear only after you sign in. Its Terms of Service say payments are non-refundable, while its annual-plan help article offers to refund the unused time if you ask. Several of its critical reviews are about paying up front and cancelling.
“The price is hard to ignore - it's several times what most email tools cost, and if you don't live in your inbox, you probably won't get your money's worth.”Shai D., G2, July 2026
“Cannot cancel subscrption by myself.”Philippe Branche, Trustpilot, February 2026
SaneBox gets price complaints too, mostly once you add accounts or want features beyond the Snack plan's two.
“It’s a premium product with a premium price.”Ryan S., G2, June 2026
Which email accounts each one supports
Superhuman's help center is direct about it: “We only support Gmail and Microsoft 365 hosted accounts at the moment.” iCloud, Yahoo, Fastmail, and other IMAP accounts can't be added, and there is no unified inbox for several accounts. SaneBox works with Gmail, Microsoft 365 and Exchange, iCloud, Yahoo, Fastmail, and any IMAP server, so a personal iCloud address and a work Outlook account can both be filtered.
Privacy, AI training, and read receipts
Both need broad access to your mailbox. What they do with it differs. SaneBox says it decides importance from message headers and doesn't keep copies of your email. Superhuman displays and sends your mail, so it handles full message content, and its privacy policy (effective July 6, 2026) says it uses the information it collects to train its own AI models; you can turn that off for your content in account settings. It says it contractually bars its outside AI providers from training on your data, and that it makes money from subscriptions, not from selling user content.
Superhuman also has a history on tracking. In July 2019, after a widely shared blog post criticized its read receipts for logging recipients' locations, it removed location logging, deleted the stored location data, and made read receipts opt-in (TechCrunch, July 3, 2019). Read Statuses still exist as an opt-in feature that shows senders when and on which device you opened their email, and Superhuman can block other senders' tracking pixels for you.
SaneBox vs Superhuman reviews, like for like
On G2, the 50 most recent reviews of each average close together: 4.76 for SaneBox (June to September 2026) and 4.71 for Superhuman Mail (March to September 2026). G2 labels a review incentivized when the reviewer was offered something for writing it. None of SaneBox's 50 carry that label; 42 of Superhuman's do. On the App Store the two tie at 4.6, though Superhuman's 3.7K ratings are a much larger sample than SaneBox's 648.
Trustpilot is lopsided, and Superhuman's side is thin. Of SaneBox's 50 most recent reviews, 49 were unprompted, averaging 4.86. Superhuman's profile is unclaimed and has 12 reviews in all, every one unprompted, averaging 1.5 (pulled October 1, 2026). Twelve reviews are too few to judge a product on, but the complaints repeat: cancelling, paying up front, and the app sending promotional email in the user's name.
“It sent an e-mail to loads of contacts from me advertising itself”Oscar Chang Anderson, Trustpilot, May 2026
SaneBox's critical reviews have their own pattern: it takes weeks of training, can misfile mail early on, and some users find it hard to remove. They are all in the full SaneBox review set.
“The AI seems to need a bit more training than I'd like, requiring me to still continue checking folders to ensure it didn't miss anything.”Leila B., G2, December 2025
Using SaneBox with Superhuman
You don't have to choose. SaneBox's help center has a guide to running both, and it flags one conflict: when a Superhuman reminder ends or you use “Mark Not Done”, Superhuman moves the message back to the inbox, and SaneBox reads that as you marking it important. The fix it suggests is to use SaneBox's own reminders, or to ask support to change a setting so those moves don't retrain it. If you want to try the filter first, the 7-day free trial needs no card.
Where Superhuman wins
- It's a complete email client, so sorting, reading, writing, scheduling, and follow-ups all happen in one fast app.
- Its keyboard-first design is the most praised thing in its reviews; people who learn the shortcuts say they get through email much faster.
- AI writing is built in: drafts in your voice, instant replies, one-line summaries, and (on Business) Ask AI across your inbox and calendar.
- It has team features SaneBox doesn't: shared conversations, team comments, shared drafts, and team read statuses.
- Its App Store rating rests on a larger sample: 4.6 across 3.7K ratings against SaneBox's 4.6 across 648.
