Why people look past Clean Email

The most common reason in recent critical reviews is money. Clean Email's Terms of Use say plans are billed in advance, non-refundable, and never prorated. The exceptions apply only to people who bought without using the free trial: a refund within 30 days of purchase if your email service isn't supported, or if you ask within 7 days without having used the service. A yearly plan is a one-year contract; if you cancel early, the Terms say you are still billed for the remaining months. To avoid a renewal you must cancel at least 2 business days before it.

“Even though I contacted customer support immediately after receiving the charge notification, they flat-out refused to refund my money.”Jairo Fuentes, Trustpilot, August 2026

The second is automation that went further than people wanted. Clean Email's rules, sender settings, and Screener act on new mail in the background, and some reviewers say wanted mail was moved, held, or deleted.

“It did an initial clean sweep that was helpful but then it started acting on its own.”Heather Anton, Trustpilot, September 2026
“The system frequently makes mistakes by automatically moving emails from Gmail into different folders, often bypassing the Primary inbox altogether.”Giorgos Chrls, Trustpilot, June 2026

The third is what Clean Email doesn't try to do. Its own SaneBox comparison page says it doesn't rank incoming mail by importance, has no equivalent of SaneNoReplies for follow-ups, and doesn't send a daily summary of what it filtered. Its free plan cleans up to 1,000 messages and leaves out the Screener, Unsubscriber, and Auto Clean rules.

Read its ratings with the sources in mind. Clean Email scores 4.6 across 714 Trustpilot reviews. Of the 50 most recent (June to September 2026), 46 came through its own review link and averaged 4.91, and the 4 unprompted reviews averaged 1.25. Trustpilot's banner on its page says it hasn't invited customers recently, while the per-review tags mark those 46 as coming through its link; we report the tags. For comparison, 49 of SaneBox's 50 most recent Trustpilot reviews were unprompted and averaged 4.86, though 4 reviews are too few to set against 49. On the App Store the two are close: Clean Email 4.5 across 3.8K ratings, SaneBox 4.6 across 648.

The 3 best Clean Email alternatives

  1. SaneBox

    Sorts new mail by importance

SaneBox does the job Clean Email's own SaneBox comparison page says Clean Email doesn't: it ranks incoming mail by importance. It learns from what you open and answer, keeps mail that matters in your inbox, and moves the rest to folders such as SaneLater and SaneNews, and you correct it by moving a message. It adds follow-up tracking (SaneNoReplies), reminders, snooze folders, and a Daily Digest, and it works inside the email app you already use. If it doesn't suit you, it offers a 30-day money-back guarantee on eligible purchases, which you request from support. On Trustpilot, 49 of its 50 most recent reviews were unprompted and averaged 4.86. Clean Email is cheaper, though, and has a free tier. One account costs $29.99 a year at Clean Email with every feature, against $65 a year for SaneBox's Snack plan with 2 features; 10 Clean Email accounts cost $99.99 a year, while 4 SaneBox accounts with everything cost $319. SaneBox has a 7-day trial and no free plan, Clean Email has more tools for clearing an old backlog in bulk, and SaneBox misfiles some mail while it learns.

  2. Leave Me Alone

    Unsubscribing, with easier exits

If you mainly used Clean Email to unsubscribe, Leave Me Alone does that at the source: it follows the sender's link or emails them for you. Rollups bundle the lists you keep into digests, and a Screener and Spam Blocker hold back new senders and cold pitches. It costs $9 a month for 4 accounts or $16 a month for unlimited accounts; you can start with 10 free unsubscribes and no card, or pay $19 once for a 7-day pass that doesn't renew. It advertises a 14-day money-back guarantee, and you can cancel a subscription any time from the billing page with no penalty or notice period. On the downside, there's no iOS app yet, it reads mail content for Rollups and its Spam Blocker, and most of its Trustpilot reviews (78 of 97) came through its own review link; its 19 unprompted reviews average 4.37.

  3. Unroll.Me

    Free

Unroll.Me lists your subscriptions and lets you Block, Keep, or Rollup each one into a daily digest, and it charges nothing. Its phone app scores 4.7 across 131,757 App Store ratings. It is funded by data from your commercial email instead: it is owned by NielsenIQ and uses data from your commercial emails, such as receipts and shipping confirmations, in products it sells, including to data brokers, and the FTC finalized an order against it in December 2019 over how it described that data use. It also doesn't support Outlook 365, works in English (US) only, and Block moves a sender's mail to a folder rather than unsubscribing you.

What reviewers say about these Clean Email alternatives

We quote praise and criticism for each. On SaneBox, the praise is about not missing important mail, and the complaints are about the mistakes it makes while it learns:

“I missed important emails and only discovered that they had been misfiled.”Barry Den, Trustpilot, June 2020

When to stay with Clean Email

Stay if your goal is clearing a large backlog or managing many addresses cheaply. Clean Email includes every feature on every paid plan, costs $49.99 a year for 5 accounts or $99.99 a year for 10, and runs on the web, iOS, Mac, and Android. Its bulk tools, which group mail by sender, size, date, and type, are more thorough than SaneBox's Email Deep Clean. If the refund terms worry you, use the 14-day trial (no card) before paying, choose monthly billing, and cancel at least 2 business days before a renewal.

“Cleared out and sorted 2800+ emails in less than an hour.”Arielle Hui, Trustpilot, July 2026

Switch to SaneBox if the daily stream is the problem: you want the mail that matters kept in your inbox and the rest set aside without writing rules, plus follow-up tracking and a 30-day refund window. Its trial runs 7 days with no card; see SaneBox pricing and how cancelling works before you start.
