Is SaneBox legit? The company, its privacy model, and the complaints
By Jean Luc Poitier, SEO and growth marketing strategist · SaneBox Reviews · Updated October 1, 2026
Yes. SaneBox is a real, long-running service from SaneBox, Inc. in Boston, and most people who pay for it keep paying. It averages 4.7 across 1,700+ ratings on Trustpilot, G2, Capterra, and the App Store, and PCMag named it an Editors' Choice in its May 2023 review.
The legitimate worries are practical ones: it needs wide access to your mailbox, cancelling and removing its folders confuses some people, and its support draws complaints. Each is covered below.
Who runs SaneBox
Stuart Roseman, who earlier founded and sold Gamesville, started SaneBox in 2010; Dmitri Leonov is a co-founder. The company is private and self-funded, with no outside investors, and lists its mailing address as 6 Liberty Square, Boston. It has claimed its Trustpilot profile since 2015 and answers negative reviews there in public.
We found no Better Business Bureau profile for SaneBox, and we didn't find any lawsuits or regulatory actions against it.
What SaneBox can see in your mailbox
SaneBox works on your mail server, so it needs access to your account. Its sign-up page asks for “access to your contacts, permission to read, write, send, and delete email.” Gmail and other supported services connect with OAuth, which you can revoke at any time; other providers need your password or an app-specific password.
For sorting, the company says it looks only at headers (sender, subject line, and date) plus how you treat each sender, and that it never stores full emails or attachments. Optional features that read a message body, such as its AI reply drafts, which are a beta you request from support, don't keep the body either, according to its security page.
Its security page links a Google Cloud Application Security Assessment (CASA Tier 2) letter from the testing lab TAC Security. That letter was issued on April 22, 2025 and expired on April 23, 2026. We found no newer one posted, so we can't say it's current. The page also mentions an audit by Leviathan Security Group and a HackerOne bug bounty, neither of which we could confirm from a published report.

The complaints worth knowing before you sign up
Across the 136 reviews we quote, the critical ones repeat a few themes. The most common is getting out: people who closed an account found SaneBox's folders, and sometimes its filtering, still in place.
“And STILL I log in to more emails from them, the folders are there still, and they’re still filtering emails.”Kruppscya, App Store, December 2024
Support is the second theme. Phone support comes only with the top plan, and some reviewers describe slow or unhelpful answers, including one long-time customer whose sorting went wrong after an outage.
“Until they had a huge outage in Sept of 2025.”M Bhargaw, Trustpilot, October 2025
The positive reviews are just as specific, and far more common. Many come from people who have kept the service for years.
“Ten years of a cleaner inbox, less stress, and more time back in my day.”Tom B., Capterra, May 2026

How to try SaneBox safely
Start the 7-day free trial on one account first; it doesn't ask for a card. Use Manual Mode if you'd rather nothing leaves your inbox until you train it, and check the SaneLater folder daily for the first week. If you decide against it, cancel from your SaneBox settings and choose to have its folders removed, then revoke its access in your email account's security settings.

Is SaneBox a scam?+
No. SaneBox, Inc. is a Boston company that has sold the service since 2010, it holds a 4.7 average across 1,700+ ratings on four review platforms, and PCMag gave it an Editors' Choice award in May 2023. The 'scam' reviews that exist describe trouble ending a trial or getting folders out of a mailbox, which is worth reading before you sign up.
Does SaneBox read my emails?+
To decide what's important, SaneBox says it looks at message headers (sender, subject, date) and your history with each sender, not message bodies, and that it doesn't store your email. To work at all it asks for broad access to your mailbox, including permission to read, write, send, and delete email.
Is SaneBox safe for a work account?+
Check your company's policy first. SaneBox for Business adds admin controls and can use Active Directory delegation for Microsoft Exchange. Its most recent published Google security assessment (CASA Tier 2) ran from April 2025 to April 2026, and no renewal is posted yet.
Can I trust SaneBox's reviews?+
Mostly, though more than half of SaneBox's G2 reviews are marked as incentivized, and many arrived in invitation drives. Its Trustpilot reviews are mostly unprompted and score the same 4.8. We quote critical reviews from every platform on this site.
