Why people leave SaneBox, from its own reviews

Most SaneBox reviews are positive: it holds 4.8 on Trustpilot across 758 reviews and 4.8 on G2 across 243. The critical reviews still repeat the same six complaints, and each one points to a different kind of replacement.

The first is cost once you add accounts. Snack covers one account and two features for $9.49 a month or $65 a year. Two accounts need Lunch ($15.99 a month or $109 a year), and four accounts with every feature need Dinner ($42.99 a month or $319 a year).

“It is a bit expensive, especially with multiple accounts.”Brison H., G2, June 2021
“I still use Sanebox but downgraded to a lower tier subscription and just one of my email addresses rather than my prior 3 until it improves.”Leila B., G2, December 2025

The second is training and misfiled mail. SaneBox learns from what you open, answer, and move, so the first weeks need checking, and some people find important mail sitting in SaneLater.

“I missed important emails and only discovered that they had been misfiled.”Barry Den, Trustpilot, June 2020
“I’m getting sick of it filtering out obviously important emails”donbruno83, Reddit, August 2026

The third is support. Phone support comes only with the Dinner plan, and several reviewers describe slow or unhelpful email replies.

“The company offers no telephone customer support, unless you buy the premium level!!”Rich Nichols, Trustpilot, September 2026

The fourth is reliability after an outage. One user of more than ten years reports that sorting went wrong after an outage in September 2025 and that support couldn't fix it. It is a single report, but a detailed one.

“Until they had a huge outage in Sept of 2025. And since then, it has been a nightmare.”M Bhargaw, Trustpilot, October 2025

The fifth is the iPhone app, which some fans of the service avoid. It holds 4.6 across 648 App Store ratings, but its critical reviews call it buggy or clumsy.

“But the app just is too buggy and undermined the service.”LexEPPY, App Store, May 2021
“But this last upgrade is infuriating.”Sea n Sky, App Store, September 2026

The sixth is getting out. People who delete the app or close the account without removing SaneBox's folders find them, and sometimes its filtering, still there. Our guide to cancelling SaneBox covers the steps.

“Deleted this after I accidentally installed it. Now I can’t get rid of the folders in my Gmail.”Grimlet, App Store, January 2024

The 6 best SaneBox alternatives

  1. Clean Email

If cost or a cluttered backlog is the problem

Cheaper at every tier, with every feature on every plan: one account is $9.99 a month or $29.99 a year, five are $49.99 a year, and ten are $99.99 a year. A free plan cleans up to 1,000 messages, and the 14-day trial needs no card. It groups old mail by sender, size, and type for bulk cleanup, sends unsubscribe requests, runs your own rules on new mail, and can hold first-time senders in a Screener. It works with any provider, through its web, iOS, Mac, and Android apps. Its own SaneBox comparison page says it doesn't rank incoming mail by importance, and it has no follow-up tracking or daily digest. Its terms make payments non-refundable apart from narrow exceptions, and a yearly plan is a 12-month contract you must cancel at least two business days before renewal.

  2. Leave Me Alone

If you want real unsubscribes for less

It unsubscribes you from lists on its servers, where SaneBlackHole moves a sender's future mail out of your inbox, and adds Rollups (digests), a Screener, and a Spam Blocker. It works with Gmail, Microsoft accounts including Office 365, Yahoo, iCloud, AOL, Fastmail, and any IMAP mailbox, and you keep your own email app. Ten unsubscribes are free; then it's $9 a month for four accounts, $16 a month for unlimited accounts, or a one-off $19 Seven Day Pass, with a 14-day money-back guarantee. It doesn't sort mail by importance, it has no iOS app yet, and its privacy policy says the Spam Blocker reads message content and keeps some of it to train its classifiers.

  3. Superhuman

If you want a full AI email client

A separate email client with AI Auto Labels that separate marketing, cold pitches, and social updates, Split Inbox, AI drafts, keyboard shortcuts, and full apps for Mac, Windows, the web, iOS, and Android. It costs much more: Mail Starter is $30 per member a month billed monthly, or $25 billed annually, with no free plan. It works only with Gmail and Microsoft 365, its Terms say payments are non-refundable, and its privacy policy says it trains its own AI models on user content unless you switch that off in settings. Of its 50 most recent G2 reviews, 42 are marked incentivized.

  4. Shortwave

If you use Gmail and want AI for less

An AI email client for Gmail and Google Workspace with a free plan (90 days of search history, no AI filters) and a Pro plan at $18 per seat a month, billed monthly only. Its AI filters, which sort new mail from a prompt you write, start on the Business plan at $30 per seat a month. It doesn't support Microsoft 365 or Exchange. It refunds a payment on request within 14 days. It reads email content for its AI features, stores data in Google Cloud, and lists OpenAI, Anthropic, and Pinecone as sub-processors. Of its 50 most recent G2 reviews, 47 are marked incentivized.

  5. Unroll.Me

If it has to be free

Free. You choose to Block, Keep, or Rollup each subscription; Block moves a sender's future mail to an "Unroll.Me/Unsubscribed" folder rather than sending an unsubscribe request, and Rollup gathers the rest into one daily digest. It supports Gmail, Yahoo, AOL, iCloud, and Outlook.com, but not Outlook 365, and only in English (US). It is owned by NielsenIQ and uses data from your commercial emails in products sold to companies, including data brokers; you can opt out of its measurement panel in settings. It settled FTC charges in 2019 over how it described that access. Its App Store rating (4.7 across 131,757 ratings) is higher than SaneBox's.

  6. Your email app's own filters

If you'd rather control every rule

Gmail filters, Outlook rules, and Apple Mail rules cost nothing extra and do exactly what you tell them, so nothing gets filed by a guess. The trade-off is upkeep: you write a rule for each sender or pattern, nothing learns from what you open or ignore, and there is no daily digest of what got moved.

What reviews of the SaneBox alternatives warn about

Clean Email's recent unprompted Trustpilot reviews are mostly about refunds and automation that moved or deleted mail, though its invited reviews are glowing.

“It did an initial clean sweep that was helpful but then it started acting on its own.”Heather Anton, Trustpilot, September 2026
“Cleared out and sorted 2800+ emails in less than an hour.”Arielle Hui, Trustpilot, July 2026

Leave Me Alone's reviews praise its support, and one critic says the effect faded once the pass ran out.

“what I appreciated even more was the kind and thoughtful support I received when I needed help merging my accounts.”James Washington, Trustpilot, April 2026
“As soon as you stopped their service (7 days pass), my inbox became the same as it was before.”Dimiter Avtanski, Trustpilot, May 2024

Unroll.Me's critics say its Block option hides mail instead of unsubscribing.

“it doesn't unsubscribe anything. It sticks certain emails into a separate folder and i still have to go through the folder.”Gayle, Trustpilot, February 2025

Reasons to stay with SaneBox

None of the alternatives does what SaneBox does: sort each new message by how you treat its sender, on the server, so the result shows up in whatever app you already use, with any provider. Clean Email, Leave Me Alone, and Unroll.Me don't rank mail by importance. Superhuman and Shortwave do something similar with AI, but only inside their own apps, only for some providers, and from $25 a seat a month. SaneBox also tracks sent mail that got no reply (SaneNoReplies) and sends a daily digest of what it moved.

Its reviews hold up like for like. In our October 1, 2026 pull, 49 of SaneBox's 50 most recent Trustpilot reviews were unprompted and averaged 4.86, and its 50 most recent G2 reviews averaged 4.76 with none marked incentivized. Superhuman's and Shortwave's recent G2 reviews averaged 4.71 and 4.54, with 42 and 47 of 50 marked incentivized.

“once I realized how unroll.me was using my data, switching to sanebox was a no brainer.”Corinn P., G2, June 2021
“It’s a premium product with a premium price.”Ryan S., G2, June 2026

If the iPhone app is the problem, you don't need it: SaneBox's folders appear in Apple Mail, Gmail, Outlook, or any other app. If cost is the problem, dropping to one account on Snack costs $65 a year, or $109 for two years. If you're still deciding, the 7-day free trial covers every feature and up to four accounts with no card, and if you've just paid, the 30-day money-back guarantee applies to eligible purchases when you ask support. If you do leave, follow how to cancel SaneBox so its folders come out cleanly.

SaneBox alternatives FAQ

What is the best SaneBox alternative?+

It depends on why you're leaving. For cost or a messy backlog, Clean Email is cheaper and has a free plan. For unsubscribing, Leave Me Alone sends real unsubscribes from $9 a month. For a full AI email client, Superhuman ($30 per member a month) or Shortwave (free plan, Gmail only). None of them sorts new mail by importance inside your existing email app the way SaneBox does.

Is there a cheaper alternative to SaneBox?+

Yes. Clean Email covers five accounts for $49.99 a year and ten for $99.99 a year, against $319 a year for SaneBox's four-account Dinner plan. Leave Me Alone is $16 a month for unlimited accounts. Within SaneBox, the one-account Snack plan is $65 a year, or $109 for two years.

Is there a free alternative to SaneBox?+

Unroll.Me is free, but it's funded by NielsenIQ's use of data from your commercial emails. Clean Email has a free plan for up to 1,000 messages, Leave Me Alone gives 10 free unsubscribes, Shortwave has a free plan for Gmail accounts, and every major email app has its own filters or rules.

Does anything sort email by importance like SaneBox?+

The closest are AI email clients: Superhuman's Auto Labels and Split Inbox, and Shortwave's AI filters on its Business plan and up. Both work only inside their own apps and only with certain providers. Clean Email says on its own SaneBox page that it doesn't rank incoming mail by importance, and Leave Me Alone and Unroll.Me are unsubscribe tools.

What happens to my folders if I leave SaneBox?+

When you cancel in your SaneBox settings, choose to have its folders removed, then revoke SaneBox's access in your email account's security settings. Reviewers who skipped those steps found the folders still in place. SaneBox offers a 30-day money-back guarantee on eligible purchases if you ask support; cancelling alone doesn't trigger a refund.
