SaneBox vs Clean Email: sorting new mail by importance, or cleaning up the pile
By Jean Luc Poitier, SEO and growth marketing strategist · SaneBox Reviews · Updated October 1, 2026
Clean Email is a cleanup tool. You open its app, see your mail grouped by sender, size, and type, and delete, archive, or unsubscribe in bulk, then set rules for what comes next. SaneBox is a filter. It decides, for each new message, whether it belongs in your inbox, based on how you treat that sender, and keeps doing it without rules.
Clean Email is much cheaper, especially for several accounts, and has a free plan. Pick it to clear a large backlog or manage many addresses on a budget. Pick SaneBox if the daily stream is the problem and you want important mail separated from the rest automatically, with follow-up tracking and a refund guarantee.

Filtering new mail vs cleaning old mail
Clean Email's own comparison page concedes the central difference: it doesn't rank incoming mail by importance the way SaneLater does, and it won't learn which contacts matter to you. Its strengths are on the cleanup side. It groups thousands of messages into Smart Folders and suggested actions, sends unsubscribe requests for you, and runs your rules on new mail in the background. Its Screener, off by default, holds mail from first-time senders until you allow them.
SaneBox works the other way around. You don't open it to clean; it moves mail into folders as it arrives, and you teach it by dragging a message to a different folder. That suits a busy inbox where the hard part is spotting the few messages that need you today. For a one-time purge of an old backlog, Clean Email's tools are more thorough than SaneBox's Email Deep Clean.
Price, and what happens if you want your money back
On price, Clean Email wins clearly. Every paid Clean Email plan includes every feature, and the yearly prices are low: $29.99 for one account, $49.99 for five, $99.99 for ten. SaneBox meters features as well as accounts, so its $65-a-year Snack plan covers one account with two features, and four accounts with everything costs $319 a year.
Refunds run the opposite way. Clean Email's Terms of Use make plans non-refundable and never prorated, with exceptions only within 30 days for buyers who skipped the trial; a yearly plan is a 12-month contract, and cancelling less than two business days before renewal means you're charged. Several of its recent critical reviews are about exactly that. SaneBox offers a 30-day money-back guarantee on eligible purchases, though you have to ask support for it.
“I missed the cancellation window before renewal by less than a few hours, they would not provide a refund or a pro-rated refund.”Andrzej Kardys, Trustpilot, August 2026
Reviews, like for like
The overall Trustpilot scores are close: SaneBox 4.8 across 758 reviews and Clean Email 4.6 across 714. How the reviews arrive differs. In our pull of each company's 50 most recent Trustpilot reviews (October 1, 2026), 49 of SaneBox's were unprompted and averaged 4.86. For Clean Email, 46 came through its own review link and averaged 4.91, and the 4 unprompted reviews averaged 1.25, too few to read much into. On the App Store the two are level: 4.6 for SaneBox, 4.5 for Clean Email.
The complaints differ in kind. Clean Email's are about billing and refunds, plus a few users who say its automation moved or deleted mail they wanted. SaneBox's are about early misfiling, cancelling, and support, all covered in the full SaneBox review set.
